The State of the Crispy Cabbage Blog

state-of-the-blogLadies and Gentlemen, the president of the Crispy Cabbage blog!

[applause][standing ovation][camera pans to some old guy sleeping]

My fellow Crispies… The state of the blog is… Strong!

[raucous cheers][prolonged applause]

Thank you.  Thank you.  We now have, with this very address tonight, 30 posts along with 28 mildly amusing illustrations… and a privacy statement on the disclaimer page!

[thunderous applause]

To date, we have had more than 2300 page views and more than 700 visitors to our site… and we have 25 fans in Brazil who just seem to really like cabbage!

[out-of-control whooping and hollering][celebratory gunfire]

We have 72 Pinterest followers.  More than 475 on Twitter… Half a dozen who actually Enjoy.  Reading.  Our blog!

[Absolute mayhem][Mr. Money Mustache’s mustache starts on fire]

For those of you who haven’t seen a Presidential State of the Union Address, that’s a pretty accurate depiction.  Tune in to Trump’s later this month.  It should be pretty interesting.

Correction:  Trump’s televised address to a joint session of Congress on February 28 is technically not a State of the Union Address.  It should still be interesting to watch.

Since this is my 30th post, I wanted to give grades for the campaign pledge I did way back on post #15.  Just to keep me focused.  Like a true politician, the results are pretty terrible.  Not surprising, anything I scored well on, is vague and open-ended.  Here you go:

I will write at least 101 posts (Grade B)  What did I say?  Open-ended.  I didn’t put a timeline on this one so it’s hard to grade.  I’ll be generous and give myself a B since I’m still trucking’ with no signs of giving up.  I’m moving a little more slowly than I would have liked, so points off for sloth.

I will ship at least one post a week (Grade D-)  I should give myself an F here, because I’ve actually failed at this one.  Two posts in November?  Pathetic!  But extra-credit points for righting the ship in January pulled me to a D-.

I’m going to try to stick to a weekend post schedule.  I’d even like to sneak a bonus weekday post in every once in a while.  All you dedicated fans out there deserve it!

I will write at least 5 guest posts this year (Grade D)  This one is an utter fail so far, but I still have until September to pull it off.  Things aren’t looking so good, though.

I haven’t written a single guest post in the 4 months since I made the pledge even though I’ve had plenty of chances.  Other bloggers have generously offered, but I’ve been too caught up in my own thing.

I’ve discovered an awesome community and I need to make more of an effort to be a contributing member of it.  I’m going to focus extra hard on this one the next few months.  I just hope my opportunities haven’t dried up.

I will write meaty articles (Grade C+)  I don’t even really know what this means.  Meaty?  By  journalism standards, my research is sub-par and I haven’t done any earth-shattering exposes.  But that’s a pretty high standard for a blog.  From a blogging standpoint, the content probably passes.  I hope at the very least it’s interesting to read.  I added the “+” for trying to make it unique.

I will update my logo by the end of 2016 (Grade F)  Whoops!  I actually set a deadline for this one and missed it by a month.  Have I not learned anything from politicians?  Don’t commit to concrete deadlines and nothing measurable!

I will continue drawing (Grade A)  This is the main differentiator of this blog in an ocean of money-related blogs, so I’ve really got no choice.  Even though I enjoy drawing, it kind of stinks when a post is ready to go and I can’t come up with a drawing to go along with it.  Some of you have said you really like the drawings and I really appreciate it.  When I’m stuck, that’s more than enough motivation to continue drawing.  Thanks!

I will NOT focus on my stats (Grade F)  Talk to my wife 😦  Checkin’ your stats again, honey?

I will NOT focus on making money (Grade B-)  I have to admit, it’s still in the back of my mind.  I’d like to eventually make at least enough to cover web hosting and other costs.  Maybe even enough to pay for some improvements to the website.  But I’ve got no expectations.  I’ve stayed pretty focused on just putting out content to reach my 101 post goal (however slow that may be).

I will NOT be ashamed of having a blog (Grade C-)  A passing grade for this one.  Barely.  I acknowledge it when people bring it up, but I don’t go out of my way to tell anyone I have a blog.  I don’t really know why.  I guess it’s because, despite what I just said, I deeply and secretly desire to making millions of dollars of passive income when this blog blows up while remaining completely anonymous.  Is that too much to ask?

So, what does that give me for an overall grade on the Crispy Cabbage Campaign Pledge?  Yikes!  A C- .  And I’m rounding up!

  1. I’m betting there are more than 11 other people besides me that enjoy reading Crispy Cabbage! Would love to host a guest post of yours (and an awesome drawing) if you find yourself looking for a place to send one 🙂

  2. As long as you’re having fun, you’re doing great. Any external measure of success is gratifying, but it’s the internal reward that is tops.

    Cheers to mostly passing grades!

  3. Crispy,
I also don’t share with friends that I am doing this. I did once or twice and there was a blank expression that made me think they thought I was an idiot. I guess it is ‘safer’ to stay incognito and be the man behind the curtain. Love the blog, looking forward to reading all 101 !!

    • Yeah. It’s definitely not easy. I’m going to have to step out of my comfort zone eventually if I want this blog to go anywhere. Otherwise, I’m kind of just preaching to the choir (and the random Brazilian that’s Google-searching “cabbage” for whatever reason). Thanks for reading, Brian!

  4. The Crispy Cabbage blog kicks ass. I dig it and my blog had at least 7 visitors yesterday. Haha

Seriously, I dig the articles and drawings.

There are a few friends of mine that know about my blog and I highly doubt they follow it, because I get the same blank looks.

Keep the posts coming (especially ones with The Offspring lyrics included)!
