I thought it would take more than a decade. But drone delivery may be happening much more quickly than I thought. I saw this nugget in the news on Tuesday, Amazon to Test Drone Delivery in the UK, and I drew up a little cartoon vision of the near future where our smart devices, big data and Amazon team up to deliver what we never knew we wanted far faster than we ever could have imagined.
I bet my brother a year and half ago that drone delivery would be grounded well past 2020. But he insisted he’d be delivering my Christmas package by drone to my front door by the end of 2019. I think I’ve underestimated our insatiable appetite for ultimate convenience and instant gratification. I think I’ve underestimated just how well Jeff Bezos and Amazon have tapped that vein. I think I’m going to lose that bet. Bro! What was the wager? I can’t remember for the life of me.

Go figure, a game made it happen. The best thing about it, with AR you actually have to go places and interact with real things to unearth the virtual nuggets. This takes it well out of Amazon’s reach and, for once, gives an advantage to retailers that actually have physical stores. In many ways it runs completely contrary to the Amazon model, which seeks to maximize convenience so you never have to leave your house… ever (see Drones!). […]
